Gabion wall are double twisted hexagonal woven 95% Zn and 5% Al coated steel wire mesh compartmentalized baskets with a rectangular box shape.
Gabion Wall Description
Gabion walls are double twisted hexagonal woven 95% Zn and 5% Al coated steel wire mesh compartmentalized baskets with a rectangular box shape. The compartments or cells are of equal size and dimension and are formed by internal diaphragms being placed within the basket. The compartments or cells are filled with natural stone and the diaphragms minimize stone migration within the basket providing even distribution of the stone fill throughout the basket even after structural movement.
The Galfan coating provides improved corrosion resistance in comparison to a conventional galvanized coating, combining, in effect, the passive corrosion inhibition of aluminum oxidation with the active and passive effects of zinc. Galfan (95% zinc, 5% aluminum) has proven to be 2 to 3 times more corrosive resistant than the same thickness of hot-dipped galvanized. Depending on the environment, it may take 50 years to 150 years for 5% rust to show on the surface of Galfan when above ground.
Gabion wall shall be manufactured with an 80 x 100, 100x120 mesh type having a nominal mesh opening of 3x1x1 gabion mesh,83 x 114 mm, 104x135 Tolerances on the mesh opening shall not exceed ± 10% on the nominal dimension D values. A gabion wall is an affordable retaining wall that averages $5 to $40 per square foot.

Gabion retaining walls in their simplest form are a fusion of rock and metal wire. Gabion walls are essentially simple in nature and structure, essentially forming a large wall of stacked rocks. For tiles, crushed bricks and cobblestones, which are often used in gabion retaining wall construction, all materials used should be evaluated for size and strength to ensure optimum integrity.
Already in use for thousands of years, gabion retaining walls are a tried and true structure that can provide an aesthetic and practical addition to urban spaces and redevelopment projects.
Gabion walls will last as long as the mesh wiring that holds them together. While you can reasonably expect any of these structures to last a long time, some of the wiring can last up to 60 years!
