What is a Sack Gabion?

Share:

Sack gabion is a cylindrical structure composed of a machine-woven double-nine hexagonal metal mesh surface. The construction site is filled with stones to form a flexible and water-permeable structure, which is used in river improvement and various rescue and disaster relief projects.

The tubular units are filled with gabions and tied tightly together at the project site. The modular unit is then used to provide erosion protection for river banks, scour protection for bridge abutments, or any situation where immediate defense against the effects of water erosion is required. The sack gabions are lifted into place using suitable equipment and then simply stacked on top of each other to form a mass of contained rock.

What is sack gabion made of?

The mesh of the sack gabion is made of high-quality steel wire that is heavily galvanized to provide long-term corrosion protection. The additional protective polymer coating is also suitable for more corrosive environments or where a longer design life is required.

Sack gabions are equipped with reinforcing steel wires inserted during fabrication to allow for closure during installation. To reinforce the structure, all mesh panel edges are stitched with larger diameter threads. When filled with stones, sack gabions can be used for river control and various emergency applications.

How to use sack gabions?

Sack gabions assembly and placement

The sack gabions are shipped with all components attached and ready for installation.

Folded Sack Gabion units should be removed from the bundle and placed on a hard, flat surface. They should be opened, unfolded, and pressed into their original shape for assembly.

● Foundation Preparation

The foundation on which the sack gabion is placed does not need to be leveled and graded, as sack gabion is used to provide a firm platform in areas where poor casting conditions exist or in areas formed in a wet environment.

Appropriate measures should be taken to separate the foundation layer from the rock-filled sack gabion in accordance with engineering specifications (geotextile, drainage works, etc.). Geotextiles need to be installed behind or underneath.

● Lacing

The sack gabion is assembled by rolling the mesh panels into a cylindrical shape and overlapping the edges of the paneling. The edges are secured by tensioning the transverse spirals. The excess spirals should be secured around the fabric edge line by wrapping the thread around itself. Once the longitudinal overlap is secured, one end of the cylinder can be tied tightly. This is achieved by pulling the ends of the bottom spiral tightly together and securing it by winding the wire again and wrapping it around itself. Care should be taken to avoid damaging the wire coating. The other end of the cylinder is left open to allow the sack gabion to be filled with suitable stones.

● Placement

For ease of placement, sack gabions can be placed individually or in pairs, as long as they are tied together. When lifting the sack gabion, care should be taken to lift the sack gabion using a thicker wire.

Features of gabion sack gabion

  • Self-permeable: There are voids between the stones inside the sack gabion. The stone filling facilitates water infiltration into the structure, relieves hydrostatic pressure, ensures the shear strength of the soil, and contributes to the stability of the whole structure; at the same time, it saves the cost of traditional water retaining equipment and reduces the overall cost.

  • Long service life: The material of sack gabion is 10% aluminum-zinc alloy steel wire, excellent manufacturing process determines the uniformity of the zinc layer, better corrosion resistance, and the service life can reach 100 years.

  • Economical: The sack gabion protection project consists of a steel mesh box and filling. Its cost is lower than the price of concrete and lower and close to the price of cement masonry. It can save the huge cost of foundation treatment, especially in bad soil and grass-roots restoration and protection project, which greatly reflects its advantage of low price.

  • Easy to install: Sack gabions can be made into semi-finished products according to the design and then installed and shaped according to the drawing, which is easy to operate, less disturbed by climate, and suitable for mechanized operation, which not only ensures the project quality but also speeds up the project progress.

  • Gabion bag packing: Gabion bag packing bag is basically with fasteners, in order to facilitate transportation and handling in the factory to carry them tied together, the wire is tied into a roll. Fasteners must be stored in dry conditions.

  • Sack gabion material: electro-galvanized wire, hot-dip galvanized wire, high hot-dip galvanized wire, as well as Galvanized wire, plastic-coated wire, and other raw materials, can be used.

  • Gabion sack treatment process: zinc. For use in harsh environments, a PVC coating of 0.5 mm can also be added.

To close the bag faster during installation, steel is inserted at the end of the mesh during the manufacturing process.

Uses of sack gabion

Sack gabion can be widely used in highways, railroad, slope protection, hillside greening, well fence, building breeding, zoo fence, greening fence, hillside cage, flood control cages, shore protection fences, control guiding river, spillways, diversion channels, rock collapse prevention, erosion prevention, beach protection project, bridge protection, solid structure defense project, retaining wall, port project, etc.

Advantages of sack gabion.

  • Economical and practical, we only need to put the stones into the cage, no special skills are needed.

  • Easy to transport, can be folded for transportation, and assembled on site.

  • Highly resistant to natural damage and bad weather.

  • It can withstand a wide range of deformation without collapsing.

  • Some plants can grow in the crevices of rocks and blend in with the surrounding natural environment.

  • It has good permeability and can prevent damage caused by fluid static electricity.

The mesh used to make sack gabions is produced in our factories around the world. Many of our plants are ISO 9001 certified for their management and production systems.
